Put your Heart in your Home

As we move forward on this incredible journey called life, our Home plays a vital role in our daily existence. Home is the space we spend the most time in and is potentially one of the best places to sustain our spirit. Our residence is the cocoon that we retreat, recharge, and rekindle our relationship with ourselves.

What we call Home is part of the foundation that supports our overall wellbeing. Regardless of the size, location, or whether we live by ourselves or share our Home with family, friends, or roommates, Home is one of the pillars of self-care that can support who we are.

Home has the potential to:

• Reenforce what is great about each of us

• It can make us feel good about ourselves

• Influences a sense of wellbeing

• Provides a haven from whatever is occurring in the world

Therefore thoughtfully, cultivate your space to reflect the care you need and is authentic to you. Applying this nurturing requires enhancing your senses with favorite colors, scents, sounds, images, and textures designed to boost your mind, body, and spirit. Since the size of your space is not a deterrent, you can have this experience in a corner, half of a room, studio, or a whole house. Choosing candles, incense, throws, printed quotes, favorite books, plants, keepsakes, pictures are some of the tools that can feather your nest. Rotate collected items seasonally to keep the senses engaged. Make your selections based on answering yes to one or more of the following questions:

Does this initiate a sense of peace?

Does this stimulate a sense of joy?

Does this inspire the best in me?

For those who have completed this exercise, periodic re-imagining, re-evaluating, and shifting will keep you from growing immune to the impact of your space on your sensibilities.

In conclusion, the late Poet Maya Angelou best sums up Home as our sanctuary with the following words:

“Home is a refuge not only from the world, but a refuge from my worries, my troubles, my concerns. I like beautiful things around me. I like to be beautiful because it delights my eyes and my soul is lifted up.
